Canons are the body of laws, rules, principles or standards that govern the church. The canons committee drafts new canons and amendments to the canons or the constitution as requested for presentation to Synod.
In May, Synod 2023 approved a motion providing that the canons committee as constituted from time to time undertake a complete review and redrafting of the canons and regulations with the intention that the canons committee present to Synod 2025 a revised set of canons and regulations.
These new canons and regulations were approved on November 2, 2024 at Synod 2024.
The canons committee reviews requests for amendments to the canons which must go before Synod. It also reviews requests for amendments to the regulations for consideration by diocesan council, and amendments of policies which must be approved by the Bishop and then by diocesan council.
