Safe Church is a diocesan training program that focuses on ensuring that our parishes are places of safety from the harm of misconduct that can occur in situations when there is an imbalance of power. Training is provided to clergy, staff, and volunteers and is designed to raise and maintain awareness about personal safety and equip individuals to manage their own personal risk.

Who is Safe Church Training for:
  1. Clergy, wardens, postulants, and all employees.

  2. Treasurers, envelope secretaries, and folks handling money.

  3. Anyone supervising or working with children or vulnerable people.

  4. Anyone who has a key to the church.

  5. Anyone in a named position.

Our Safe Church Training Program has 3 Requirements:
  1. Watch the Safe Church Video (required by A to E).
Contact your parish's Safe Church Liaison (or safechurch@bc.anglican.ca or your parish's Incumbent if there is no Liaison) to arrange a time to watch the video. Watching the video must be witnessed and an attendance sheet signed by either your parish's Safe Church Liaison, clergy, warden, administrator, or Parish Council member.

  2. Read the Diocesan Policies, sign the Acknowledgement Form (required by A to E).
Volunteers – please read the Respectful Conduct policy and sign the A-2 Form
Clergy and staff – please read the following policies and sign the A-1 Form:  Human Resources, Respectful Conduct, Information Security, Privacy and Social Media.
All policies and forms can be found here on the diocesan website:

  3. Submit a Criminal Record Check (CRC) or Police Information Check (PIC), with vulnerable persons sector check (required by anyone listed in A to D only).

CRCs are required for volunteers

To apply for a CRC, ask your parish's Safe Church Liaison for the online link and code to the Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP). Once completed, your CRC will go directly to the synod office. You will be contacted directly by the CRRP if any follow up is required. There is a 30-day period to complete a follow-up request. Re-application will be required past 30 days.

PICs are for anyone paid over $500/year

To apply for a PIC, contact your local police/RCMP department (Where to Obtain a PIC link to PDF here). You will need a letter from your parish stating your paid position. This can be provided to you by your Safe Church Liaison, or by emailing safechurch@bc.anglican.ca if your parish does not have a Liaison. There is a processing fee (approx. $75). Submit your receipt for reimbursement to your parish, or to the diocese if applicable. You will be contacted directly by the police/RCMP if any follow up is required. There is a 30-day period to complete a follow-up request. Re-application will be required past 30 days.

The original hardcopy of your PIC must be mailed to or dropped off at the synod office at:

Synod Office – Safe Church Coordinator
900 Vancouver Street
Victoria, BC, V8V 3V7

*If you are a volunteer and are unable to complete the online application for a CRC, a PIC obtained through your local police/RCMP department is also acceptable. You will need a letter from your parish stating that you are a volunteer and the application fee will be waived.
