You are lovingly invited to attend an online study of the film Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts. Sponsored by St. George’s Anglican Church, Cadboro Bay in Victoria, BC, this event is open to all members of the public.
In light of the mass graves of children at Canadian residential schools, this is an opportunity to learn what you can do to be part of the solution and the healing for us all that needs to happen.
Doctrine of Discovery is a documentary about decisions made by settlers over the past five centuries that continue to profoundly – and negatively – impact Indigenous people. Many of 2015 Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action refer to this film, which gives insight into the racist foundations of some Canadian property laws and other laws still in existence today. We offer this study program in the spirit of hope and peace, to help us all learn and change and be part of a new, better relationship with Indigenous people. Educating ourselves is the first step toward reconciliation. During the four evenings of discussion, we will honour the seven traditional teachings of love, truth, honesty, bravery, wisdom, humility and respect.
